Unicorn Bar and Reflections on a Silver Screen are delighted to present a free screening of contemporary queer filmmaking legend Dee Rees’ directorial debut, PARIAH, on Saturday, December 27th at 4pm.
It’s 2011 in Fort Greene, and seventeen-year-old Alike, or “Lee” (played with aching grace by Adepero Oduye) lives a double-life: by day, she is the straight-laced girl that her Christian mother (Kim Wayans) wants her to be, and by night, she’s the jeans-and-hoodie-clad bestie to elder lesbian Laura (Pernell Walker). Things get complicated when Lee’s mother arranges for her to spend time with Bina (Aasha Davis), a girl from their church who, it turns out, just might be as fatal a femme as Lee is a lowkey butch.
Featuring Charles Parnell as Lee’s sympathetic police detective father, Pariah is a modern, warm-hearted coming-of-age classic that will beautifully tie a bow around your queer holiday festivities. See you at the movies!
