Sand Mandala Created for World Peace in Woodstock, October 16th-19th

Tashi Kyil Buddhist Monks Host Free Public Events Including Lectures, Art, Music

Woodstock, NY, October 7, 2025–The Tashi Kyil Tibetan Buddhist Institute of Kingston is hosting a series of community events to celebrate the creation of a Sand Mandala for World Peace in Woodstock, NY, on October 16th-19th. Free public events include the ceremonial creation and dissolution of the mandala, a lecture by renowned Buddhist scholar Robert Thurman, a Thangka art show, and live music and poetry.

Buddhist monks who have traveled from the Tashi Kyil Monastery in Dehradun, India will create and then dissolve a stunning World Peace Sand Mandala—a sacred geometric configuration that signifies impermanence and renewal. According to organizers, the four-day celebration honors the Buddhist teaching of impermanence (annica) and the idea that nothing is permanent and everything is constantly changing. During these challenging times of disruption and change, meditating on impermanence can provide relief, perspective, and a path toward greater peace and mindfulness, they say.

The Tashi Kyil Tibetan Buddhist Institute (TKTBI) opened in Kingston, NY in May 2025, seeking to advance the teachings and practices of Tibetan Buddhism. TKTBI is associated with the Labrang Tashi Kyil Monastery in Dehradun, India, and is dedicated to fostering spiritual values, including kindness and compassion.

The building at 5 Library Lane has served as a doctor’s office starting in 1775 and then as the beloved home of the Woodstock Library from 1927 until August 2025. The building is about to take on a new function for the Town of Woodstock and event organizers invite the public to look around to see what’s in store.
