DIY Tenant Organizing: Building Power Through Community with June Nemon

The Hudson Valley is an epicenter of the national housing crisis that has become a leader in offering tenant protections. Now, thousands of Hudson Valley residents have a choice: allow the exploitation to continue or organize and fight back. In the spirit of Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera’s S.T.A.R. House and its communal approach to housing queer youth, during this workshop we’ll review what it takes to build communal power through tenant associations that protect our access to affordable housing. Attendees will leave with clear steps to create their own associations and win real change in their daily lives.

This event is part of “Happy 80th, Marsha!”, a festival celebrating the 80th birthday of trans icon Marsha P. Johnson with 15+ events in multiple venues around Kingston, NY from August 10th-24th. Optional masks will be provided at each event. For festival details please visit marsha80th.com and follow us on Instagram: @marsha80th
