The Art of Gerald “Jerry” Hopkins

Big Gay Hudson Valley is celebrating LGBTQ+ Pride month with a display of a portion of Wall of Color, a 40-panel compilation created by the Ulster County-based artist Jerry Hopkins. 15 of the original 40 pieces in the compilation are on display now in the window of Bluecashew Kitchen Homestead (37 N Front Street, Kingston) for the entire month of June. This is the first time the piece is on display to the public since its debut at the Susan K Gallery in Saugerties in 2010.

The Life and Legacy of Jerry Hopkins

The artist and his identical twin, Jay Hopkins, started their career as the musical duo Twinn Connexion in 1962. Pioneers of the “Sunshine Pop” genre, the gay twins hailed from Helena, Montana and moved to New York City when signed by Decca Records in 1963. While their songs were warmly welcomed – most noticeably ‘The Sixth Avenue Stroll” – homophobia within the music industry at the time killed their singing career before it could take off.

After the passing of his twin in 2001 and the loss of his partner, Bob Cessna, in 2008, Jerry continued to express his creativity by focusing on the visual arts. Jerry has created a beautiful and dramatic collection of art over the last fifty years and he is proud to make many of them available for purchase by collectors.
