Elizabeth De Bethune is a visual storyteller whose paintings capture the poetry of everyday life. Rooted in observation and portraiture, her work moves from live sketches to finished oil paintings, creating series that honor individual presence while revealing the collective identity of communities all while creating spaces for storytelling and connection. Rooted in observation and her daily practice of cell-phone photography as visual note-taking, her imagery seeks to reveal the poignancy within the ordinary, extending empathy and shared recognition to the viewer.

“I am a figurative painter based in Yonkers, New York, creating portrait series that document and honor communities,” said De Bethune, she continues, “My first, Out in Yonkers, portrayed members of the Yonkers LGBTQ community, inspired by the enduring power of portraiture I encountered at the Uffizi. My current project, Out in Orient, records the women’s community of Long Island’s North Fork—a once-affordable, discreet haven for women-identified women, now facing displacement and change. Through these works, I seek to create time-capsule portraits that preserve visibility and belonging.”

Out in Orient will be on view in the Gillette Gallery, concurrent with OBSESSIONS, Painting on Paper, an exhibition by Thomas Sarrantonio in the Balter Gallery.
