CRUX LGBTQ Climbing – All-Level Top Rope Trip
WHO WE ARE
CRUX Climbing is dedicated to expanding access to the sport of rock climbing and outdoor recreation for LGBTQIA (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer/questioning, intersex, and asexual) communities in the NY-metropolitan area.
Outside of the LGBTQIA community and want to support CRUX? Your financial and volunteer support go a long way towards CRUX’s advocacy for LGBTQIA access to the sport. This allows us to hold safe and affirming spaces for LGBTQIA participants at our events. Email info@climbcrux.org to get involved!
TRIP OVERVIEW
The Peter’s Kill Climbing Area (also written “Peterskill”) is part of the Minnewaska State Park Preserve on the Shawangunk Mountain ridge. Like the nearby Gunks, the rock in Peterskill is quartzite conglomerate. Unlike the Gunks, all of the routes are a single pitch and range in length from 40 feet to about 90 feet. On top of that, it is very easy to hike to the top of most routes and build a top rope anchor. For these reasons, Peterskill is the perfect place for people new to outdoor climbing as well as climbers who might want to practice their natural, bolted, or gear anchor building.
WHAT GRADES SHOULD I EXPECT?
Routes in Peterskill range from under 5.6 to just a few over 5.12. Just over half of all the top-rope-friendly routes are in the range of 5.7 to 5.9.
WHAT TO BRING
You will need a helmet, a harness, and rock shoes. If you own a personal anchor, a rope, carabiners, or cordelette, please bring those things, too! Helmets are required at all CRUX outdoor trips. A climbing helmet is ideal, but a bike helmet works, too.
TRANSPORTATION
There will be a van leaving from and returning to Greenwich Village, much like All-Levels trips in years past. What’s new this year is that we’re collecting a flat fee for the van upfront! If you will be driving yourself to Peterskill, you can still sign up for free.
ADDITIONAL COSTS
Experienced CRUX climbers will be building the top rope anchors, but we are not professional guides. The event itself is free. You are responsible for the cost of transportation, and the $10 Peter’s Kill rock climbing day pass. (Bring $10 cash, please!)
REFUNDS
It is possible to get a refund on the van fee up to 7 days before the trip. If the trip is cancelled due to weather or other circumstances, you will receive a full refund.
