Rhinebeck Theatre Society is excited to announce auditons for the 2015 Tony Award winning musical, Fun Home, directed by Dorothy Louongo. Winner of the 2015 Tony award for best musical, this innovative show reinvents the classic coming-of-age story. Based on Alison Bechdel’s graphic memoir of the same title, the musical follows Alison’s memories of her sexual awakening and her father’s suicide.

Location: The CENTER for Performing Arts at Rhinbeck

Callback Date & Location: April 4th 7-10pm at the Hudson Valley LGBTQ Community Center

Performance Dates: June 1 – 24, 2018. Fri & Sat at 8pm, Sun at 3pm.

Character Breakdown:

ALISON – Mezzo-soprano, 35-50; a 43-year-old lesbian cartoonist. Identification or familiarity with the LGBTQ community is an asset.

MEDIUM ALISON – Mezzo-soprano, 18-25; a 19-year-old freshman at Oberlin College

SMALL ALISON – Alto, 8-14; a precocious and creative girl around 9 years old

BRUCE BECHDEL – Baritone, 35-55; Alison’s father, closeted gay man, funeral director, antique home restorer, and high school English teacher. Identification or familiarity with the LGBTQ community is an asset.

HELEN BECHDEL – Mezzo-soprano, 35-55; Alison’s mother, classical pianist, English teacher. She struggles with her marriage after years of ignoring Bruce’s infidelity and ignoring her own desires.

CHRISTIAN BECHDEL – Alto, 9-15; Alison’s older brother, around 10 years old

JOHN BECHDEL – Alto, 7-12; Alison’s younger brother, around 6 years old

ROY/ MARK/ PETE – Tenor, 18-30; three roles tangentially connected to the story. Roy is a young man in a secret relationship with Bruce, who hires him to do yard work. Mark is a high school junior who becomes the object of Bruce’s attention, and Pete is a mourner at a funeral.

JOAN – Alto, 18-27; Alison’s openly-gay peer. An activist.
