SUMMARY:Unicorn Bar’s Punk Night: Chico Raro / Mona Freaka
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Sunday, August 24th for a night of Latin, queer punk music from Chico Raro Band, with opener, Mona Freaka! We’re excited to see them fill up the space with their exhilarating presence and sound.\n@chico_raro_band ( https://www.instagram.com/chico_raro_band/?hl=en# ) is a Latin punk queer band based in New York. The project was launched in 2020 by Colombian trans noir artist Jei Fabiane, a lyrical singer and violinist, who began an artistic exploration merging their operatic voice with punk, electronic music, and lyrics denouncing homophobia. In 2021, the project took shape as a band with the addition of three internationally experienced musicians: bassist Juan Sebastián Monsalve, singer Lina Silva, and saxophonist/synthesizer player Jorge Buitrago.\nThey have performed at festivals such as Punk Island Fest, Lorville Fest, Protest Fest, Queerly Fest, Veranito Summer Fest, and U Street Music Fest, among others, as well as in punk clubs and queer movement spaces across the city, cultivating a diverse and transnational following. Their sound is defined by genre hybridity, creating a singular aesthetic universe where sonic aggression coexists with moments of vocal intimacy and theatrical expressiveness. The band draws from 70s and 80s influences—punk, new wave, and disco-funk—layered with electronic textures reminiscent of techno and industrial music, bel canto melodies, and Afro-Caribbean rhythms. Intense, joyous, and danceable, their music asks no permission: Latin-tinged punk, abrasive electronics, spoken-word poetry sharp as knives, and a voice that shifts from lyrical singing to raw screams without warning.\nMembers:\nROOOKs (Jorge Buitrago)is a Colombian artist based in Brooklyn, blending electronic music, live vocals, saxophone, and visual performance. His sonic identity was shaped by ska, reggae, and punk from his early days in Bogotá (2006), later evolving into emo, hardcore, metalcore, rap, and electronic sounds. Influences like Nadie (Medellín), La Mojiganga, Sumo, The XX, The Suicide Machines, and A Day to Remember fuel his style. His work embodies resistance, honesty, and brotherhood. ROOOKs crafts raw, emotive experiences where persistence is the engine and truth, the banner.\nLina Silva is a Colombian musician and music therapist based in New York since 2021. Her work intertwines Afro-Colombian roots, sonic experimentation, collective creation, and contemporary vocal exploration. She has recorded and provided backing vocals for Victoria La Verde, Curupira, Martina Camargo, and Ángel Villafañe. In New York, she is part of projects like La Manga, Las Melinas, La Conspiración BK, and Cantos al Viento. She has performed at Lincoln Center, MoMA, Joe’s Pub, and the Kennedy Center. Her artistic approach seeks to create resonant experiences connecting music, memory, the body, and healing.\nJuan Sebastián Monsalve is a Colombian composer, bassist, and producer based in New York, with an extensive background in punk and rock. A key figure in Colombia’s underground scene, he has collaborated as a soloist, producer, and arranger with legendary bands like 1280 Almas and Kraken, as well as international artists such as Susana Baca and Carlos Vives, balancing raw rock energy with sophisticated musicianship. His early work, including *El Ángel Azul*—Colombia’s first rock opera—set a precedent for genre experimentation in the country. Leading Curupira, Monsalve channels rock’s rebellious spirit through Afro-Indigenous rhythms and jazz improvisation. With decades of innovation, he continues to push boundaries and ignite global stages with fire and passion.\n@monafreaka_official ( https://www.instagram.com/monafreaka_official/?hl=en# ) are 90s influenced riot grrrl, indie rock, & garage punk vibes, through the lens of Gen Z. Based out of Woodstock, NY, they’ve played with punk bands, indie & grunge acts, and even Moon Unit Zappa. This summer sees the release of their debut EP “Pucker & Pout” on limited edition Pink Vinyl & USB Cassette.\nmonafreaka.com ( http://monafreaka.com/ )\n7PM Doors 7:30PM Show & $15 ADV / $20 DOORS\nWe can’t wait to rock out with y’all!\n\n
